Jumpstarting Productivity Vol. 1 - Clean Your Desk!
Ever notice how sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you simply cannot push yourself into being constructive? This is in large part due to inertia. You know, that law Newton came up with that states that an object at rest will stay at rest. This applies on a countless number of levels, including your occasional inability to get up and do what you need to do. But how would a person combat this? Well, it’s really quite simple - start with something easy and something doable, but something still worthwhile. For me, this is often the act of cleaning my desk, and I think if you try it yourself, you’ll get the same results.
So, if you’ve decided to read on, lets see what you’d be accomplishing with the simple deed of de-cluttering your desk.
- It’ll create more room
It’s obvious, but it’s still worth paying attention to. I find it so much easier to think when I have room to pull out a pen and paper to write down the ideas that strike my fancy. Plus, it’ll look nice if ever you get company, or if your boss walks by. Bosses always give gold stars for a neat desk. Well, maybe not literally, but they will remember it, and it’ll make you seem like a better worker.
- It’ll make working so much easier.
It’s so much easier to find the papers you need when there aren’t a thousand other usually useless papers strewn about. It’s the worst feeling in the world when you really need a specific paper and can’t find it in the place that you thought it was because it got lost in a sea of processed trees. By keeping everything organized, it won’t happen ever again.
- It’ll make you feel better about yourself and your work space.
Doesn’t it just feel good to have all that space? Not to mention actually being able to find things when you need them. Being able to say that I have a clean desk makes me feel like I’ve already accomplished something. It only goes uphill from there!
- It’ll serve as a quick but powerful boost to start your working spirit
The best part about taking the time to tidy up your work space is that it kick-starts your initiative to work. Remember how inertia keeps you from getting to work? This act pushes beyond that, and gives you momentum that can be used to get things done. It’s an interesting experience when you suddenly go from wanting to be lazy to actually wanting to get things done. It’s an experience that I think everyone should experience at least once in their life.
